Cincinnati Peace “Street Sweep”
CPM is most commonly known for our Street Sweep event which is an effort to improve urban communities through environmental health. CPM’s inspiration stemmed from the desire to take pride in our community and create a healthy environment of which citizens can be proud. CPM hosted a bi-weekly ‘street sweep’ held on a major street in a different neighborhood with high concentrations of trash. Some duties consist of picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks, cleaning and gutting trash-filled lots, and interacting with the locals and youth in that specific neighborhood.
Black Men’s Healing Circle.
The Black Men’s Healing Circle was a safe space for men of color to address their mental and emotional health through confidential brotherhood, discussion-centered curriculum, and self-expression. Our three-part series included sessions: a) Am I allowed to cry? b) Secure our mental health, and c) Recognizing different types of abuse. This program aimed to ensure men of color have a supportive space to work toward self-improvement, which will also positively impact those who have us as fathers, brothers, sons, and friends.
Motivational Seminars.
The Cincinnati Peace Movement is most known for its two seminars, “Why Not Me?” and “I Can Do It.” These seminars were given at Young Not Silent Cincinnati and Covington Community Center, partnering with “The Plug Cincy.” Each workshop consists of a motivational speech, poetry performance, and interactive activity. The purpose of these seminars is to bring motivation and awareness on the importance of confidence and decision making when it comes to being a teenager walking into adulthood. These seminars can be booked all year long at any institution.
Entrepreneurship and Community Development.
The Build the Block Pop-Up Shop was a six month project that served as a business accelerator and community-centered event space located in Norwood, Ohio. The purpose of the Build the Block Pop-Up Shop was to showcase small businesses and artists who are often overlooked by bigger corporations and institutions. In addition to our efforts to expose and accelerate small businesses and artists, we also served as event space hosting a variety of educational programs. Over the course of our project, we (1) hosted over 50 grassroots businesses, artists, authors and community organizations in Cincinnati, (2) served as an ally and advocate of NVA(Non-violent Association of Cincinnati) , a part of the IJPC (Inter Justice and Peace Center), and (3) organized the Black Men’s Healing Circle a mental health awareness and focus groups for men of color.
Youth Mentorship.
I Can Do It was a partnership with The Plug Cincy where the Cincinnati Peace Movement had an opportunity to run a seminar entitled “The Company You Keep” to elementary school children about decision making. This workshop was particularly important because we were able to draw upon personal experience with peers and the negative effects of poor decision making as a result of hanging around bad influences. Students were directed to participate in a discussion about these topics followed by an arts and crafts activity.
